Meet Our Positive Psychology Therapists
Therapy for Flourishing: Holistic Positive Therapy
What if therapy wasn’t just about feeling less stressed or anxious—what if it was about feeling more joy, more meaning, more alive? At Balanced Awakening, we offer Holistic Positive Therapy for clients who want to go beyond symptom relief and build lasting well-being from the inside out.
Whether you’re navigating a life transition, feeling stuck in the “okay but not fulfilled” zone, or simply ready to thrive—not just survive—we’re here to walk with you. This approach is grounded in the science of Positive Psychology and inspired by the SPIRE model of whole-person flourishing developed by Harvard researcher and author Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar.
Sessions are available in person in Chicago or virtually across Illinois.
What Is Holistic Positive Therapy?
Traditional therapy often focuses on problems or what’s not working in your life. While that can certainly be important, research in positive psychology shows that building happiness, meaning, and personal strengths is equally powerful in promoting emotional and physical health.
At Balanced Awakening, we integrate this strengths-based perspective into therapy, using the SPIRE framework to explore and enhance five key areas of well-being:
Spiritual
Physical
Intellectual
Relational
Emotional
These five dimensions reflect the fullness of what it means to thrive. According to Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, happiness is not a singular destination—it is cultivated when we align all aspects of our lives in a meaningful way.
“Happier people live longer, are more successful, more creative, more generous, and more productive.” – Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, The Pursuit of Perfect
In fact, a growing body of research confirms that positive emotions aren’t just “nice to have”—they’re essential to health. Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and other leading institutions show that people who regularly experience gratitude, joy, and optimism tend to have lower levels of inflammation, stronger immune function, and greater resilience in the face of stress.
The SPIRE Model: Five Dimensions of Well-Being
The SPIRE model helps us look at well-being as a whole—not just the absence of distress, but the presence of vitality, meaning, and joy. Based on Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar’s groundbreaking work on happiness and optimal living, each SPIRE dimension is an essential building block in the architecture of a flourishing life.
Spiritual Well-Being
“A meaningful life is a happy life.” — Tal Ben-Shahar
Spiritual well-being is about feeling connected to something greater than yourself. This could mean a sense of purpose, alignment with your values, or a connection to nature, community, creativity, or a higher power. In therapy, we help you explore what brings you inner peace and guides your decisions. This dimension is not necessarily religious—it’s about accessing a deeper sense of meaning and fulfillment in your everyday life.
Clients often explore:
Life purpose and legacy
Personal values clarification
Moments of awe, wonder, or presence
Practices like meditation, reflection, or time in nature
Physical Well-Being
Positive psychology emphasizes that our physical state directly affects our emotional and cognitive experience. When your body is supported, your mood, focus, and resilience improve as well.
In therapy, we bring gentle awareness to how sleep, movement, nutrition, and rest impact your energy and well-being. You won’t receive a fitness plan (we’re not trainers) but we will invite you to treat your body as an ally on the path to emotional growth.
Together, we may explore:
The mind-body connection and stress regulation
Sleep routines that support mood
Nourishment practices that align with self-respect
Movement or stillness as self-care
Intellectual Well-Being
Ben-Shahar reminds us that the mind thrives when it’s engaged. Lifelong learning, creativity, and curiosity all contribute to a fulfilling, happy life.
Intellectual well-being isn’t about academic achievement—it’s about staying mentally stimulated and engaged in a way that excites you. Therapy can be a space where you rediscover passions, challenge limiting beliefs, and imagine new possibilities.
This might include:
Cultivating creativity through writing, art, or play
Exploring new interests or skills
Overcoming perfectionism and fear of failure
Engaging in reflective or philosophical conversation
Relational Well-Being
Relationships are the strongest predictors of happiness. In the SPIRE model, relational well-being means nurturing authentic, meaningful connections—with loved ones, community, and yourself.
Therapy is a powerful place to heal relational wounds and build new skills for intimacy, communication, and boundary-setting. We also focus on your relationship with your own inner voice since how you treat yourself shapes how you show up with others.
We may explore:
Navigating attachment patterns and trust
Strengthening communication and emotional intimacy
Releasing people-pleasing or over-functioning patterns
Building supportive, reciprocal relationships
Emotional Well-Being
Dr. Ben-Shahar teaches that emotional well-being isn’t about always being happy—it’s about expanding your capacity to feel fully, process healthily, and recover authentically.
In this work, we help you name and move through emotions, both light and heavy, while also learning how to create more moments of joy, gratitude, and calm. We work with your nervous system, your thought patterns, and your inner dialogue to support emotional agility and resilience.
Therapy may include:
Practices that increase positive emotion (like gratitude and savoring)
Skills for managing overwhelm, anxiety, or emotional numbness
Understanding emotional triggers and regulation
Creating room for joy alongside grief, uncertainty, or transition
What Therapy Might Look Like
Sessions are collaborative and tailored to your unique needs. Some clients come seeking more vitality after burnout. Others want to reconnect with their sense of wonder or feel more aligned with their values.
We may draw on research-backed tools like:
Gratitude and savoring practices (shown to boost mood and improve immune function)
Journaling and mindfulness (linked to reduced anxiety and increased clarity)
Somatic awareness and nervous system regulation
Values clarification and life visioning
Strengths-based coaching techniques
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit. This is therapy as a space for growth, clarity, and purpose—a place to cultivate a life that feels like your own.
Is Holistic Positive Therapy Right for You?
This approach might resonate if you:
Feel “fine” but not truly fulfilled
Are entering a new chapter of life or career
Long for more meaning, joy, or creativity in your day-to-day
Want to grow rather than just cope
Are curious about how to integrate evidence-based happiness practices into your life
As Dr. Martin Seligman, a pioneer in positive psychology, puts it: “Psychology is not just the study of disease, weakness, and damage—it is also the study of strength and virtue.”

Holistic Positive Therapy FAQs
-
Holistic Positive Therapy is a strengths-based, research-informed approach to therapy that focuses on cultivating happiness, purpose, and whole-person well-being. Rather than only addressing what feels “wrong,” this approach helps you build on what’s already working—your strengths, values, and inner resources—to create a more fulfilling life.
At Balanced Awakening, we use the SPIRE model, developed by positive psychology expert Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, to guide the process. SPIRE stands for Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Relational, and Emotional well-being. We explore all five areas in therapy to help you feel more balanced, connected, and alive.
This type of therapy is ideal for people who want to move beyond symptom management and into flourishing. It’s about growing your capacity for joy, resilience, and meaning—no matter where you’re starting from.
-
Holistic Positive Therapy can help you feel more fulfilled, more connected to your purpose, and more aligned with who you truly are. If you’ve ever thought, “My life looks fine on the outside, but something’s missing,” this approach may be for you.
Through this work, you can:
Clarify your personal values and vision for your life
Increase your capacity for joy, gratitude, and self-compassion
Build resilience and emotional agility
Improve your relationships—with others and with yourself
Reconnect with creativity, curiosity, and meaning
Feel more energized and grounded, both mentally and physically
Rather than just managing symptoms, Holistic Positive Therapy helps you grow in the direction of wholeness. You’ll leave sessions with tools that support long-term well-being—not just quick fixes.
-
Holistic Positive Therapy shares many core elements with traditional therapy—like a safe, confidential space, personalized support, and evidence-based tools. What makes it different is the focus.
Rather than only looking at what's going wrong, this approach also explores what’s going right. We work together to strengthen your natural resilience, enhance meaning and joy in your life, and align you with your core values. It's a full-person, forward-moving approach rooted in positive psychology and the SPIRE model of well-being.

Our therapy rate for the first two sessions is $250. After that, 55 minute sessions are $225. Most of our somatic therapists are in network with BCBS PPO and Aetna insurance.
Maximize Your Out-of-Network Benefits with Ease
We’ve partnered with Thrizer to help you get the most out of your out-of-network benefits- especially if you're insured through plans like UnitedHealthcare or Cigna. Thrizer simplifies the reimbursement process by acting as your payment processor and handling claims on your behalf. That means no more super bills, no chasing down insurance companies, and faster reimbursements.
Curious about your coverage if we’re out of network? We can likely provide a personalized estimate of your out-of-network benefits through Thrizer, so you’ll know exactly what to expect before getting started.

In Holistic Positive Therapy, each session is tailored to you—your goals, your pace, and your definition of well-being. Some sessions may feel more reflective and insight-oriented, while others may include tangible tools, practices, or even moments of creativity or mindfulness.
You can expect a space that is compassionate, nonjudgmental, and focused on your whole-person growth. Your therapist may gently guide you to explore areas of meaning, values, relationships, physical self-care, or emotional patterns—all within the context of the SPIRE model.
Rather than focusing only on symptoms, we’ll also highlight what energizes you, what gives your life purpose, and what brings you joy. Over time, sessions often become a space where clients reconnect with parts of themselves they had forgotten or pushed aside—and begin to live more fully and authentically.
-
Yes! But with some exceptions. There are 3 situations where, legally and ethically (whether we want to or not) we would have to break your confidentiality. These include if we learn of any potential child or elder abuse from you, we determine that you are at risk of harming yourself or someone else, or we receive a court order for your medical records. Also, some of our providers are under supervision and regularly consult with their supervisor about their client sessions. Supervisors have the same obligation to client confidentiality.
-
Yes! We offer virtual Holistic Positive Therapy sessions as well as in-person. Sometimes it’s easier and more convenient for clients to engage in therapy virtually.
-
Not at all. In fact, Holistic Positive Therapy is ideal for people who are functioning well but feel like something is missing. You might describe yourself as “fine” on the surface—but inwardly, you may crave more purpose, creativity, connection, or emotional balance.
This approach supports you in building on the good, navigating life transitions with clarity, and reconnecting with what makes you feel most alive. Therapy can be a space for growth, not just healing.
-
Coaching often focuses on specific goals and action steps, and while it can be powerful, it usually doesn’t address deeper emotional patterns or the full complexity of your inner life.
Holistic Positive Therapy offers both depth and direction. You’ll have the space to explore emotions, process past experiences, and heal on a deeper level—while also gaining tools for resilience, self-awareness, and personal growth. It’s a blend of reflection and action, insight and embodiment.
