BALANCED AWAKENING COLLECTIVE
Introduction to Internal Family Systems
What if the parts of yourself you struggle with aren’t actually working against you?
A therapist-created introduction to Internal Family Systems (IFS) for understanding your inner world, getting curious about the Parts that protect you, and cultivating a more compassionate relationship with yourself.
Four short video modules + guided practices + reflection worksheet · Included with membership in the Balanced Awakening Collective.
What if the parts of yourself you wish would change are actually trying to help?
Maybe there’s a part of you that overthinks everything.
A part that tries to keep everyone happy.
A part that criticizes you before anyone else can.
A part that shuts down when things become overwhelming.
Or a part that reaches for distraction when something feels too painful.
It’s easy to become frustrated with these reactions.
Why do I keep doing this?
Why can’t I just stop?
Internal Family Systems offers another way of understanding what’s happening.
Rather than treating these responses as flaws to eliminate, IFS invites you to become curious about the Parts of you that developed them—and what they may have been trying to protect you from.
The goal isn’t to get rid of your Parts.
It’s to understand them differently.
And from that understanding, begin creating a little more compassion for yourself.
A note from Rachel
Rachel Rood, LCSW created this mini-series as a gentle introduction to Internal Family Systems and the idea that even the Parts of ourselves we struggle with may have developed for important reasons.
Throughout the course, Rachel introduces you to Parts, Protector Parts, Exiles, and Core Self—and helps you begin approaching your internal experience with more curiosity rather than judgment.
You’ll explore questions like:
What is this Part trying to do for me?
What might it be protecting me from?
And what changes when I meet it with curiosity instead of frustration?
Rachel Rood, LCSW is a therapist with Balanced Awakening.
You might recognize yourself here if…
You sometimes feel like different parts of you want completely different things.
You find yourself overthinking, people-pleasing, criticizing yourself, shutting down, or distracting yourself—even when you wish you wouldn’t.
You understand some of your patterns intellectually but still feel frustrated when they appear.
You want to understand why certain reactions feel so automatic.
You’re curious about Internal Family Systems but don’t know where to begin.
You want to develop a more compassionate relationship with the Parts of yourself you usually judge.
You’d like simple practices for slowing down and getting curious about what’s happening internally.
You want to explore your inner world without pressuring yourself to fix everything you find.
You don’t have to love every part of yourself before you can begin listening to it.

PLUS: IFS REFLECTION WORKSHEET
Your IFS Reflection Worksheet
Getting to know your Parts is an ongoing process. You don’t have to understand your entire internal system at once.
Your course also includes a reflection worksheet designed to help you continue exploring what you’ve noticed in the videos and guided practices.
Inside, you’ll find:
Questions for Protector Parts
Explore what a Part does, how it may be trying to help, what it’s afraid might happen if it stopped, and what it wants you to know.
Core Self + Parts Refresher
Return to the eight C’s of Core Self and the distinctions between Managers, Firefighters, and Exiles.
Reflection Questions
Consider what emerged during the guided practices, how you feel toward the Parts you noticed, and what compassion or curiosity might look like.
A Grounding Closing Practice
End your reflection with a simple acknowledgment:
“Thank you for showing up. I’m here, and I’m listening.”
What if your reaction makes more sense than you think?
You notice yourself people-pleasing again.
Overthinking.
Shutting down.
Distracting yourself.
Being relentlessly critical of yourself.
And the reaction can be immediate:
Why am I like this?
Why can’t I stop doing this?
IFS offers a different question:
What might this Part be trying to protect me from?
A behavior that feels frustrating today may have developed at a time when it served an important purpose.
Maybe pleasing other people helped you avoid rejection.
Maybe anticipating every possible problem helped you feel prepared.
Maybe disconnecting helped when feeling everything would have been too much.
That doesn’t mean every strategy still works for you now.
And it doesn’t mean you have to let every Part make your decisions.
It means you can become curious before becoming critical.
What are you afraid would happen if you stopped?
What are you trying to protect me from?
What do you need me to understand?
Sometimes self-compassion begins not with changing the answer—
but with asking a different question.
Getting to know your Parts can sound like:
I can notice a reaction without immediately judging it.
I can wonder what this Part is trying to do for me.
I can become curious about what it’s protecting.
I can appreciate why a strategy developed even if I no longer need it in the same way.
I don’t have to fix every Part that appears.
I can listen with curiosity and compassion.
A different way to understand yourself
It’s common to experience an internal tug-of-war.
One Part of you wants one thing.
Another Part wants something completely different.
And somewhere in the middle, you can end up feeling anxious, overwhelmed, frustrated, or confused.
Internal Family Systems gives us language for understanding that experience differently.
Instead of treating your reactions as bad habits or evidence that something is wrong with you, you begin exploring them as Parts—each with its own history, fears, and attempts to protect you.
Some work proactively to keep difficult feelings away.
Others rush in when distress has already arrived.
And underneath those protective responses, IFS describes a Core Self characterized by qualities including curiosity, calm, clarity, connectedness, confidence, compassion, courage, and creativity.
This course gives you a gentle place to begin exploring those ideas.
Not by analyzing every part of yourself.
Not by forcing yourself into deep emotional work.
But by noticing.
Listening.
Getting curious.
And practicing a different response to the Parts of yourself you’ve learned to fight with.
You don’t have to understand your whole internal system today.
You can begin by meeting one Part differently.
This is one place to begin.
