BALANCED AWAKENING COLLECTIVE
Expanding Capacity: A Gentle Practice
What if your limits aren’t something you have to fight—or something that can never change?
A therapist-created experiential practice for exploring your edges, understanding your window of tolerance, and gently building your ability to stay present with what feels difficult—without pushing past yourself.
Included with membership in the Balanced Awakening Collective.
Are you coping—or building capacity?
Maybe you’re actually very good at getting through hard things.
You push through the stressful week. Step away when everything becomes too much. Find a way to manage the anxiety, the demands, the emotions, the overwhelm.
And then eventually, you find yourself back at the same edge.
Too much.
Many of us have learned how to cope.
And coping matters.
But what if there were another question to ask—not just How do I get through this? but:
What helps me stay present, grounded, and connected to myself when something feels difficult?
That’s the question at the heart of Expanding Capacity.
Not forcing yourself to tolerate more.
Not ignoring the signals telling you something is too much.
But becoming curious about your edges—and exploring whether, with enough support, you can gently stretch them without abandoning yourself.
A note from Sherraine
Sherraine Miller, LPC, ATR created Expanding Capacity after sitting with a question: What does it actually look like to build capacity—not just cope?
In this short introduction, Sherraine shares why this practice isn’t about forcing yourself to do more or ignoring your limits.
It’s an invitation to get curious about them:
What happens at my edge? What helps me stay? And what makes something feel like too much—or just enough?
Sherraine Miller, LPC, ATR is a therapist and art therapist with Balanced Awakening.
You might recognize yourself here if…
You can get through difficult periods, but find yourself hitting the same limit again and again.
You tend to push through until something becomes overwhelming.
Stress can leave you anxious, reactive, tense, or unable to settle.
At other times, too much can make you shut down, disconnect, feel numb, or withdraw.
You know when you’ve reached your limit—but aren’t always sure what to do before you get there.
You want to understand what helps you stay present when something feels difficult.
You’re interested in building greater steadiness without overriding what your body is telling you.
You want to explore your limits with curiosity rather than judgment.
You don’t have to overwhelm yourself to expand what you’re able to hold.

🎥 A Gentle Introduction to Capacity
Begin with Sherraine’s introduction to the idea behind this practice—and the question that inspired it:
What does it actually look like to build capacity, rather than simply cope?
Learn why expanding capacity isn’t about pushing harder, but becoming curious about your limits and what helps you stay with yourself at your edge.
-
🎧 Guided Expanding Capacity Practice
Slow down and explore your capacity in real time through a gentle, art-based guided practice.

No art experience needed.

📖 Exploring Your Capacity
Understand the difference between coping and capacity, explore your window of tolerance, and learn to recognize what overwhelm or shutdown can look like in your own system.
Then use reflection prompts to notice what stretched you, what supported you, and what your experience might reveal about how you approach challenges in everyday life.
What if your edge isn’t the enemy?
We often relate to our limits in one of two ways.
We push past them.
Or we avoid what feels like too much.
Expanding Capacity offers another possibility.
Instead of asking yourself to tolerate something overwhelming, you begin by noticing where you are.
What happens in your body as something becomes more demanding?
When does challenge become too much?
What helps you remain present?
What allows you to stretch without overriding yourself?
The goal isn’t to stay perfectly regulated.
It’s to become more familiar with your own window of tolerance—and to explore what happens when challenge is paired with enough support.
Because capacity doesn’t grow through overwhelm.
It grows through small, supported stretches.
Building capacity can sound like:
I can notice when I’m approaching my edge.
I can listen without automatically stopping or pushing through.
I can give myself support alongside challenge.
I don’t have to abandon myself in order to grow.
I can stretch, and I can return.
Why Sherraine created Expanding Capacity
In her work with clients, Sherraine kept noticing something familiar:
Many of us know how to get through hard things.
We manage. We cope. We push through when we have to. We step away when things become too much.
But sometimes we find ourselves returning to the same limit again and again.
Sherraine began wondering what it might look like to relate to that edge differently.
Not by forcing ourselves to do more.
Not by ignoring our limits.
But by slowing down enough to notice what happens right at the edge, what helps us stay, and what makes an experience feel like too much—or just enough.
Expanding Capacity grew from that question.
The practice pairs gentle education with a creative exercise so you can explore your response in real time: noticing challenge, noticing support, and beginning to develop greater awareness and trust in yourself.
You don’t need art experience. You don’t need to produce anything.
You just need a willingness to slow down and notice.
This is one place to begin.
