The 5 Pillars of a Healthy Relationship

In a time where dating is more confusing than ever, options for romantic partners are endless, and ghosting is the most common form of a break-up, finding someone you like enough to enter a relationship with can feel like a blessing. The bliss of finding your special someone should be enjoyed, but it’s also good to be prepared for the rough patches (every relationship has them). In this blog post, we’ll examine 5 pillars of a healthy relationship to seek out, work towards, and if absent, consider what might be missing.  

Relationships take work. Knowing what’s worth fighting for can be a difficult and confusing process, and sometimes, love isn’t enough.  It’s a tale as old as time: everything seemed perfect on paper, you committed, and suddenly, it feels like something is missing. How do you identify what that “something” is? One thing to ask yourself is “What do I want in the long run?”. Likely, you want a relationship that feels healthy, that makes you happy, that gives you space to grow. Long-term success in a relationship can be predicted by a few things, some of which being the 5 pillars: Communication, trust, respect, intimacy, and commitment. 

Communication

Personality can account for how easy it is for someone to open up to others. However, no matter how shy or stoic one partner may be in a relationship, something that shouldn’t be sacrificed is communication. A lack of openness and honesty greatly impacts the foundation of a partnership. Without communication, partners may struggle to navigate the obstacles life throws at them, drifting apart rather than being brought closer together. Actively making time to talk is a great first step to prioritize communication. It can feel clunky at first to plan out conversations, but with the speed at which life moves for a lot of us, something as simple as a check-in about the relationship can quickly fall to the wayside. Try scheduling a weekly dinner where phones are put away and TVs are turned off to enjoy one another’s company with no distractions. 

Trust

When it comes to a monogamous partnership, trust should be a given. However, trust goes way beyond fidelity. Trust serves as the foundation upon which mutual respect and understanding are built. When partners trust each other, they create a safe space where vulnerability can flourish, allowing for open communication and emotional intimacy. This trust fosters reliability, allowing partners to depend on one another during challenging times, which strengthens their bond. I’ve seen several examples of this in partnerships, where one partner may not be able to see their partner as fully independent from themselves, judging them for choices they might not make. Respect is essential in a healthy relationship, acting as a cornerstone that supports open communication and emotional safety. This starts with acknowledging each other’s feelings, values, and boundaries, without pushing back or questioning their legitimacy. When respect is present, disagreements can be navigated with empathy and understanding, rather than contempt or dismissiveness. Ultimately, respect lends to a sense of equality, ensuring that both partners thrive within the relationship, deepening their connection and commitment to one another.


Intimacy

Intimacy is often misunderstood, with many equating it wholly to sex. While sex is an important part of a romantic relationship for many, true intimacy encompasses a much wider range of emotional, physical, and intellectual connections that deepen the bond between partners. It involves sharing thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a way that fosters vulnerability and trust. Emotional intimacy allows individuals to feel understood and supported, while physical intimacy enhances closeness and affection, creating a powerful sense of belonging. Intellectual intimacy encourages the sharing of ideas and passions, enriching the relationship with shared interests and stimulating conversations. When nurtured, intimacy not only strengthens the partnership but also promotes a deeper appreciation for each other, creating a fulfilling and lasting connection.


Commitment

Commitment, like trust, may include remaining faithful within a monogamous relationship. But commitment also serves as the glue that holds partners together through life’s ups and downs. It involves a conscious decision to prioritize the relationship and invest time, energy, and effort into its growth and longevity. Commitment allows both partners to feel confident in their shared journey and future together. When both partners are committed, they cultivate a sense of teamwork and resilience, reinforcing their bond and creating a stable environment where love and trust can flourish.
